Creating your game can be a daunting task. You have to create art, assets, code, story, and more. All of that is tough for a single developer or for a small team. Well, I’m here to tell you before you pull your hair out in frustration on where to start.
Always Begin With The End In Mind
No project of any size can succeed without a plan. The best thing you can do for your game is to create a plan. By creating a plan you now have a direction that you can follow to complete your game. The direction is key because it becomes the North Star that you follow when all is dark. But, that begs the question, what goes in the plan?
What Goes In Your Plan
Your plan should have a general overview of the game’s direction. After that, the gritty details can be added later. The first thing you should come up with is the main gameplay loop. This loop is core to your success. Remember, you’re building a game first, therefore, you should start with the gameplay. The other benefit is that you will be better prepared for all other aspects of your game. The gameplay informs features, story, and more. Once you know these two, you can decide on the theme and music. Now, I won’t go into the painstaking detail about every piece of the process, but realize that the gameplay loop is the first link in the chain and where most of your time will be spent.
I will talk to you all next time, take care.
