Hey all, today we’re starting on our first big development project as part of the Ship It Game Jam. The idea of the jam is to create a fully functioning game in 3 months. Given that I’ve just started in Game Development, I thought it would be a good opportunity to create something substantial within a deadline.

Getting Started

To get started, we began with the pre-production phase of mapping out the concept of the game, mockup, and sketches for what the game should be like, along with references to other games that would be great to pull from. In our case, we’re pulling from the games Drakengard 3 and No More Straight Roads. As someone who only recently started doing any art and really using a Game Design Document, it was a fun process coming up with concepts for characters and monsters.

You can see the different enemies and what we’re trying to achieve. I’m a fan of simple designs, so this was easy for me to come up with and fit within what I could draw and create pixel art for. All of this came out of ideas from my GDD. Now, I’m focusing on a type of rhythm game as I really want to explore movement and music.

Challenges

I expect a lot of challenges along the way. This is my first time taking on a project this large in such a short timeframe. I plan to take my time fleshing out ideas focus on a strong gameplay loop within the first week to month so we sail through the rest of the project. As it stands right now, there’s still a lot of work to do but we’re making great progress every day!

Conclusion

In future devlogs I can’t wait to share the progress we make with you! I’m not sure yet if we’ll be able to make the deadline, but I’m confident we’ll have something fun. I also can’t wait to see the other projects that come out of the jam as well!

Stay tuned!!
